First Buried Pier of the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge

Dynatronic integrated buried pier of bridge

Project name: The first part integrated buried pier of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao bridge

Brief introduction: The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge (HZMB) is one of the most ambitious and complex cross-sea bridge projects ever undertaken, symbolizing engineering excellence and international connectivity. On June 20, 2013, at 12:00 am, the project reached a key milestone when the first integrated buried pier was successfully installed. This marked the formal beginning of the bridge’s “maritime assembly” stage, laying the groundwork for one of the longest sea-crossing bridges in the world.

The installation of this pier was a critical step in ensuring the long-term stability and safety of the bridge. To guarantee precision and reliability, Dynatronic played an essential role by providing advanced monitoring technology. Strain gauges and steel strain gauges were installed on the lifting slings to measure the forces exerted on the four cables during the lifting process. By closely monitoring these forces in real time, engineers were able to ensure that the massive pier was lifted, aligned, and placed securely onto its base structure.

The installation process was divided into several carefully coordinated stages:

  1. Lifting gear preparation

  2. Pier lifting

  3. Pier alignment

  4. Precision adjustment

  5. Final placement and removal of lifting gear

Throughout each phase, Dynatronic’s monitoring system provided real-time data acquisition, comparison, and analysis. The insights gained allowed engineers to fine-tune adjustments with millimeter-level accuracy. Ultimately, the installation was completed successfully, with the pier’s verticality error measured between 0.014 and 0.019, fully meeting the stringent design requirements.

This achievement not only ensured the stability of the first pier but also laid a solid foundation for the continued construction of the HZMB. By combining advanced monitoring solutions with engineering expertise, Dynatronic contributed to the success of a project that has since become a landmark in global infrastructure development.
