Project name: Ocean Drilling Platform Wave Impact Test – Real-Time Monitoring with DE-944

Brief introduction: Offshore drilling platforms are vital for global energy production, but their structures face constant challenges from harsh marine environments. One of the greatest risks comes from the impact of ocean waves, which exert significant dynamic forces on the platform’s foundations and superstructure. Ensuring the platform’s safety and stability requires precise monitoring systems capable of capturing real-time data under unpredictable sea conditions.

In this project, CNOOC Energy Development Co., Ltd. in Beijing conducted an ocean wave impact test on a drilling platform. The goal was to evaluate how the platform responded to different wave intensities and to gather the necessary data for ensuring structural integrity and operational safety.

To achieve this, engineers utilized Dynatronic’s DE-944 dynamic signal acquisition system, which was connected to the platform via submarine optical cables. This setup enabled remote collection of real-time data from the platform while it was being impacted by waves. The DE-944’s ability to handle large volumes of dynamic signals made it ideal for capturing the complex vibration, displacement, and stress data generated during the test.

The monitoring process focused on key parameters such as:

  • Vibration response of the platform under varying wave heights.

  • Stress distribution on structural elements during wave impact.

  • Displacement measurements, ensuring the platform’s stability remained within safe limits.

By continuously recording and transmitting this data, the DE-944 system provided engineers with a clear picture of the platform’s behavior in real ocean conditions. The insights gained from this test allowed CNOOC to assess design reliability, safety margins, and potential reinforcement requirements for offshore structures.

This project demonstrated the importance of combining cutting-edge data acquisition systems with advanced monitoring techniques to safeguard offshore platforms. With reliable real-time monitoring, operators can make informed decisions to improve safety, durability, and efficiency in offshore energy operations.
